Understanding Medicare: What You Need to Know About the Annual Enrollment Period

Updated: 6 days ago

What is Medicare AEP?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for those age 65 or older, receiving Social Security or Disability benefits, or with certain health conditions. The Medicare AEP (Annual Enrollment Period) is the time each year when eligible individuals can enroll in Medicare or make changes to their health coverage.

Important Dates

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period for 2024 plans begins on October 15, 2023, and ends on December 7, 2023. Coverage begins on January 1, 2024, for those who have enrolled during this period.

What You Need to Know about Medicare AEP

Medicare AEP is the time when you can enroll in Medicare plans, make changes to your existing Medicare coverage, or switch to a different plan altogether. As health and prescription needs continually change, this opportunity is important to keep in mind.

There are different types of Medicare plans available, including:

• Medicare Advantage (Part C) • Medigap (known as a supplement) • Prescription drug coverage (Part D)

During this time, you can decide which plan or combination of plans are right for you. If you already have an existing Medicare plan and do not do anything during the AEP, your plan and coverage remains the same and renew automatically.

It’s important to know the deadline for applying for coverage so that nothing is missed.
